BEAUMONT, Texas — A Jefferson County man convicted of three counts of sexual assault of a child has been sentenced to 130 years in prison after rejecting a plea deal last year that would have given him a total of 60 years.

A jury in the 252nd District Court on Thursday sentenced Stephen Michael Hayes to 65 years for each count. District Judge Raquel West ruled that two of the sentences would run concurrently, while the third would be stacked , meaning Hayes must complete the first 65-year term before beginning the next, for a total of 130 years behind bars.

Last year, Judge West warned Hayes that she had the authority to stack sentences if he was convicted due to the severity of the crimes. At the time, Hayes had turned down a plea offer of two 30-year sentences.

The jury could have given Hayes 99 years up to life in pirson on each charge.
